Welcome to my blog/website!
In truth I’ve written that a few times over my life. I’ve started and abandoned a number of blogs in my time. I’m probably not alone in that fact.
Will this time be different? I don’t know. All I know is that this time I have a clearer sense of the purpose of my site/blog.
My name is Gareth and I am a psychologist by trade. I work in the area of mental health promotion.
I am unremarkable. I suspect that I occupy this position on the normal distribution on just about every trait or characteristic.
But back in 2017, after accumulating 40 unremarkable years on the planet, I underwent what on the surface was another unremarkable life transition. I changed jobs.
I went from a job where I was working on another person’s project to a job where I got some freedom to define my own projects. This turned out to be a significant shift.
With that autonomy came a ‘switching on’ of some dormant desires, wishes and motivations. I felt like I ‘woke up’. I was no longer content to be the version of me that had been wandering aimlessly through life. I wanted to be a better version of me. That meant taking a more assertive role in bringing my own ideas to life.
It wasn’t a spiritual epiphany or anything like that. Simply a realisation that there was potentially more to my life than I had been manifesting.
Since then, as part of my job, but also outside of my work, I have been investing more time and effort into different psychology-focused projects, as well as projects that sustain my own wellbeing. This website is really just an introduction to those projects.
Some (my day job) involve a focus on mental health and productivity. Personal ones involve supporting a network of mental health professionals, assisting psychologists in their learning, and playing around at the intersection of psychology and design. Throw a bit of gardening and art in there for good measure.
I then use the blog as a place to reflect on some of the things I am learning along the way as I do these projects.
So if you’ve landed here, check out my projects (you can get at them from the homepage). If any sound interesting to you, get in touch. If not, that is totally cool. There’s a wonderful world of content and ideas out there for you to explore. The ones on this website are just those that are most pertinent to me and my personal and professional growth at the moment.
You never know, I might even be able to push myself up to here.
